SPECS - SUSTAINABLE PRIMARY EYE CARE SERVICES
SPECS – Sustainable Primary Eye Care Services programme, launched in partnership with the State Ministry of Health, Akwa Ibom and the Primary Healthcare Development Agency, portrays our commitment to delivering accessible, equitable, and sustainable eye care services—especially in underserved communities. This programme is implemented in 2 stages – Community Mobilization, free screening camp and identification of cataract and the second stage involves free cataract surgery, medication and follow up.
Thus far, VCDF has screened over 7,000 individuals, performed 701 successful surgeries, provided free eye medications to over 2,000 persons and distributed reading glasses to over 1,000 beneficiaries.
VCDF is establishing a cataract surgery unit each in Akwa Ibom and Delta States to further expand screening, surgical services and strengthening systems for community outreach across the region.
MHM - MENSTRUAL HYGIENE MANAGEMENT
MHM – Menstrual Hygiene Management programme empowers in-school adolescent girls with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to manage their growing years with dignity.
In current society menstruation is still a taboo subject and linked with cultural and religious beliefs. Lack of appropriate knowledge leads to stigma, and misconceptions which contributes to poor menstrual hygiene practices and absenteeism, especially in school. Through MHM outreaches and access to menstrual products, these adolescent girls live with confidence and dignity. VCDF is also active in contributing to adolescent health policy for sustainable change.
VCDF, in partnership with State Ministries of Health and Education, reached over 5,600 girls across Lagos, Akwa Ibom and Delta States with dignity kits including IEC materials.
Ultimately, VCDF, in partnership with the Lagos State Ministry of Health, is set to pilot reusable pad-making training workshops which will promote sustainable menstrual health solutions, reduce period poverty and encourage lasting, eco-friendly menstrual care.
Cancer Care Programme
Breast and cervical cancers remain significant health challenges among women, where limited awareness, access to screening for early detection contribute to high morbidity and mortality rates.
VDCF’s Cancer Care Programme aims to improve early detection of breast and cervical cancer through awareness, free screenings, treatment and capacity building of public health professionals.
In partnership with the State Ministry of Health and other NGO partners, VCDF provided breast and cervical screenings to 202 women in Lagos.
VCDF will scale up breast and cervical cancer screenings and treatment to reach more underprivileged women and train primary healthcare workers on basic cancer screening techniques.
