SPECS - SUSTAINABLE PRIMARY EYE CARE SERVICES

In Nigeria, approximately 4.25 million adults aged ≥40 years are blind or visually impaired, with over 80% of the blindness due to avoidable causes. Cataract is the most common cause of blindness in Nigeria and is readily treatable by surgery. VCDF aims to reduce the burden of avoidable blindness in partnership with of government health facilities and other key stakeholders through extensive outreach camps and cataract surgeries.

VCDF’s SPECS programme, designed to strengthen primary eye care services at PHC across Nigeria. Thus far, VCDF built capacities of 75 PHC Health workers and 150 community volunteers in Akwa Ibom state. These trained individuals were provided with basic instruments to identify potential cataract and pterygium cases in their 250 communities.

VCDF conducted screening camps attended by 5854 people and provided medications and eyeglasses. In partnership with the Tulsi Chanrai Foundation, 377 cataract surgery are completed and plans to expand services across various states across Nigeria.

MHM - MENSTRUAL HYGIENE MANAGEMENT

Menstruation is a unique female phenomenon. Effective MHM is vital for women’s health and rights. In Nigeria, many adolescent girls face challenges managing menstruation, impacting their education, health, and well-being. To address this, VCDF has designed the MHM programme for schoolgirls across Nigeria. This programme aims to improve access to menstrual products, promote hygiene practices, create supportive environments, and empower girls to manage their menstruation with dignity. It aims to break the taboos and stigmas surrounding menstruation, creating an enabling environment where women and adolescents can manage their periods safely, hygienically, and with dignity.

Thus far, 6860 adolescent girls received knowledge and skills on MHM and prevention of gender-based violence (GBV). Each trained girls received a ‘dignity kits’ including sanitary pads, antiseptic soap, a face towel and FAQ Handbook. VCDF in collaboration with Lagos State Ministry of Health organised MHM day awareness and reached 3000 adolescents.  VCDF is planning to scale up the MHM programme across various states across Nigeria.
